Last night the Philadelphia Auto Show festivities kicked-off with its annual Black Tie Tailgate at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Individuals took the first look at the hundreds of exotic cars, classic automobiles, new production vehicles, concept models and tuners on display at the show it was fantastic.

SPEED DEMONS  |  MANTIS SHRIMP

Mantis Shrimp…fashion statement or hunters?   Mantis shrimp or stomatopods are marine crustaceans, the members of the order Stomatopoda. They are neither shrimp nor mantids, but receive their name purely from the physical resemblance to both the terrestrial praying mantis and the shrimp.

A colourful stomatopod, the peacock mantis shrimp, (Odontodactylus scyllarus) seen in the Andaman Sea off Thailand.

Biologist Sheila Patek, of the University of Massachusetts Amherst, says the creatures she studies move at speeds that are hard for us to imagine, let alone perceive. Patek shared some of her high-speed video and explained how these organisms pull off their top speeds.

At The Bellevue last night the Philadelphia Flyers‘ Wives had their first ever sold out, Inaugural Flyer’s Wives Fashion show.  Fourteen women hit the runway modeling styles by international fashion designer Nicole Miller. The event was hosted by Chris and Lauren Pronger with Master of Cermonies Mike Jerrick and Sheinelle Jones of FOX29.

Before the Fashion show an Auction was held and was very animated and fun with Flyers Max Talbot and Jaromir Jagr positioning to promote the first item up for bid in the live auction: a bicycle signed by all the Flyers.

One of the best event of every year, HAIR O’ THE DOG, celebrated it’s 18th “birthday” at the Westin Hotel Philadelphia at LIberty Place last night. Over 1,500 + people, from all parts of town in “Black Tie” fashion were in attendance; very exciting.

The Hair O’ The Dog event originated in 1995 and has grown tremendously over the past 18 years.  Each year, portion of the proceeds from the event have been given to various local charities including: Big Brother, Big Sisters, National Constitution Center, Habitat for Humanity, Project H.O.M.E., Friends of Memorial Hall Fund, The Sunshine Foundation, the Great Group and the Bethesda Project.  This year proceeds will go to The Garden of Reflection Pennsylvania’s Official 9-11 Memorial.

Last night at the Afro-American Museum JB (Joan Myers Brown) talked about her newly released book, “Joan Myers Brown & the Audacious Hope of the Black Ballerina”, in front of a well received full house.

Joan Myers Brown is the founder of The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) and The Philadelphia School Of Dance Arts; Joan has a lot of History.

In the newly built section of the Convention center (North Broad street)  about 500 + people gathered to attend the  192nd Mayoral Inauguration for Michael Nutter last night.

There was of plenty of cultural entertainment, song and dance even though the great atrium was vast the the Event/ production company did a fantastic job making it intimate and homey for the guest.

My complaint was they did a lousy job for the visiting Press; which I may expound on later because it felt like I was in a Hockey and or Football game the way Security was instructed to prevent us from doing our occupations.

?uestlove was the DJ of the night and The Roots was the backup band… fantastic and very entertaining.  The biggest surprise, for me, was Mayor Nutter doing a duet with Black Thought and rapping his favorite song, Rapper’s Delight!  The Mayor can really really rap – Wow!
