PENN’S LANDING  |  TALL SHIP FESTIVAL

SUNDAY EVENING.  Taking place on the fan tail of the USS Olympia in celebration of the Tall Ships in Philadelphia Ted Miller and Lyn Wiesinger and the Staff of A la Maison (Ardmore, PA) had a great tasting party, A French Hospitality Table, “et Des aliments en ete” (Summer Food) aboard the USS Olympia for friends and family.

The USS Olympia is the world’s oldest floating steel warship and the sole surviving naval ship of the Spanish-American War.

“Olympia served as Admiral Dewey’s flagship at the Battle of Manila Bay, which marked the U.S.’s emergence as a world naval power. Olympia’s last official naval mission was to carry the body of the Unknown Soldier from France to the United States in 1921.

With the Fireworks barge about 200 feet away guests had a front row view of the fireworks lighting the sky and silhouetting L’Hermione in a myriad of spectacular colors.

In 1780 the L’Hermione brought General LaFayette and French troops to Philadelphia to support General Washington in the Revolutionary War.

Saturday was a total washout with rain all day. But, Sunday, who could ask for a better day? The last day of the Tall Ships Festival was full of clouds, sun and a great turn of people; NO RAIN! And no Big Yellow Ducky (don’t know what was up with that).

THURSDAY.  Despite the rain the turn out for the first day of the festival was good.  The Tall Ship Festival begins on both sides of the Delaware river and there are more than a dozen ships in port on the riverfront for the four-day festival.

Most of the events (Thursday and Friday) are free but if you want on-board access and all festival fun tickets can be purchase at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia and at Wiggins Park in Camden, NJ.

LOGAN CIRCLE.   Exhibition opening reception last night at the Free Library of Philadelphia.  The exhibition, a profound visual story, showcases the age old story of the inhumanity of humanity that continues up to this very day.  In this case the exhibition tells of “The Story of Baltic Displace Persons 1944-1952” and the Baltic disapora drawing on the memories, documents, photographs, and memorabilia of families and individuals who lived through the WWII experience.

The Friends of Rittenhouse Square, a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization, was formed in 1976 with a mission to preserve, protect, and beautify Rittenhouse Square. Funds raised by the 2015 Ball on The Square will be directed towards the preservation of Rittenhouse Square.

Rittenhouse Square is not only one of Philadelphia’s most valued landmarks, but it is also a focal point for the neighborhood, a meeting place for residents and workers, and an oasis of nature and tranquility in an urban setting. 1735 MARKET STREET.  Concerned dedicated professionals met up at the Pyramid Club last night to celebrate the Peoples’ Emergency Center’s (PEC) first Fundraiser, “Eat Dessert”, the event featured sweet treats from the pastry chefs of some of Philadelphia’s best food businesses.

People’s Emergency Center’s  Eat Dessert 1st Fundraiser

The People’s Emergency Center’s mission is to “nurture families, strengthen neighborhoods and drive change in West Philadelphia through a community of more than 240 housing units and five educational centers offering job training, parenting and early childhood education, financial education and planning, lifeskills and technology coursework, PEC seeks to change the life trajectory for the women and children who seek its services and inspire them to aspire to new heights.”

For over 22 years the People’s Emergency Center has been there and has raised nearly $60 million to help revitalize the West Powelton, Saunders Park, and Mantua neighborhoods
